stone pine caterpillars

We have four Stone Pine trees in our garden, which are native to this part of Southern Europe. Pretty though they are, they are the perfect home for the dangerous Processionary Caterpillar

From late last year we noticed the nests starting to grow so it was time to turf the caterpillars out of our lovely trees.

Once they hatch in Spring, they climb down the tree in a ‘processionary’ line and if disturbed they can shoot spikes at you which are, at best, an irritant and at worst, fatal to your pets.

The caterpillars, still quite dormant but looking scary!

Having acquired a new puppy recently, we weren’t taking any chances.  I’m happy to say the pine trees are clear for another year!
